Insurance-shopping tips

Start here

  • Shop around.
  • Choose a company and agent you can trust.
  • Look for agents and companies with good reputations in your community.
  • Check credentials. Contact the Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner's Office to make sure the agent is licensed in Wisconsin.
  • Do not buy on price alone; consider coverage and service too.
  • If someone quotes you a much lower price than his competitors, ask how he can offer this rate when others cannot.
  • Do not allow an agent to pressure you to make a fast decision. You are in control. Buy only the insurance you want and need.
  • Make your own decision. Buy only the insurance you want and need.
  • Understand what you are buying. You deserve clear explanations.
  • Pay with a personal check or money order made out to the insurance company or agency.
  • If paying with cash is your only option, make sure you get a receipt listing the name of the insurance company.
